i had a houseguest visiting this week from L.A. and as i prepared dinner she said, “you know what you need? bar stools”. she’s got a good point. if you’ve seen the layout of my cottage, you’ll know my place is small with the living room essentially flowing into the kitchen, and a wide countertop that would nicely accommodate some bar stools so guests could sit and chat as i cook. so i started looking around to see what would go with all the other countless chairs i’ve collected. funnily, the ones i like best are these bar stools — apparently by Arthur Umanoff and which i already own, but mine are white (currently stashed in my basement). so i’m thinking of a makeover: paint them glossy black and have the seats upholstered in black vinyl. i like! i seem to be particularly drawn to open, wire-framed and harry bertoia-type chairs – wouldn’t you say?
